Benefits/Statistics

  • Mentees gain social and academic skills and greater self-confidence while having fun with their college-aged mentors. In addition, OSU mentors gain opportunities to give back and expand skills for future life work.

  • Annually, about 75% of the young people have made gains in half or more of the protective factors that lead to expanded skills and improved behaviors.

  • A survey of the OSU mentors showed that 60% of mentors felt they gained increased skills in working with children and increased their own maturity. Stephanie Sparrow Hughes, The Mentoring Center’s Hub Manager, says, “We have seen real growth in kids and the mentors develop hands-on skills as well as learning the importance of community service.”

  • Annually 350-430 mentors are matched with children in schools near the OSU campus.

  • Buckeye Hub sites continue to expand and have increased from seven to 13.

  • Mentors also work with Latino and other immigrant young people who need mentors to befriend them and help ease their transition to a new country.

  • An independent evaluation done in 2006 by an OSU graduate course in Policy and Leadership found high levels of satisfaction with mentor training provided by The Mentoring Center
    • 97% of trained mentors indicated the Hub met their expectations, 91% gained knowledge about mentoring, and 79% felt prepared to mentor.
